When we first came to Bali, we fell in love with the sensual, natural beauty of Ubud and were inspired to create a place for yoga. The word Ubud means a place for healing retreat, but it is not only a place for healers, but is also famous for musicians, painters, dancers, carvers and traditional ceremonies. Ubud is the heart of Bali, where religion and creativity are part of daily life, creating a unity and lightness that you can experience.

Bali is the emerald island in the jewels of the Indonesian archipelago, covered with palm trees, lush tropical jungle and fertile rice terraces. The sacred mountain Agung at 3142 metres looks out over the whole island, and is at the centre of the Balinese culture. This culture is based on a long Hindu tradition, originally from India. Known as the island of the Gods, Bali has more temples than houses, and more than one third of Balinese life is occupied by preparing for and celebrating ceremonies.

This rich tradition started hundreds of years ago when a holy man from Java established the first temple at Champuan in Ubud. Champuan can be translated as "where the two rivers meet", and is a symbol of the duality of life. We were fascinated by this connection, because yoga has a very similar meaning. Yoga means union - to become one.

After living and working in so many countries all over the world, we were amazed by the power of this place, and decided to establish a yoga centre here. A place where we can combine the yoga way of life with a strong living tradition, that can support and encourage spiritual development. We want to share our experience of discovering this connection between yoga, and the happiness and lightness of the Balinese culture.

Bali Shakti is a place we designed to integrate healing and creative arts, in the form of seminars, workshops and classes. We combine teaching and practice to give an intensive quality of this connection and an opportunity to share and exchange this experience. We welcome students of all faiths and yoga traditions, but ask that you respect the local culture and traditions and be willing to follow their practices.
